Easter Egg Fun

Reviewed by Janie Franz

Easter Egg Fun is the second of several children's counting coloring books that Sarah V. Richard is publishing. A graduate student in elementary education, Richard is putting the teaching concepts she is learning to work in these small hand-size coloring books. Using a simple couple rhyming scheme, Richard uses verse to introduce counting, not from one to ten, but counting down from ten to one. This is unusual in a counting book because children most often are taught to count one, two, three, and so on.

Richards offers simple egg shapes for children to color according to the instructions at the bottom of the page. Sometimes, there are specific colors that she wants children to use; sometimes she wants them decorated with stripes or squares. Since each egg is numbered on each page, children can count each egg before or after decorating them. This reinforces the concept of each number.

This book, along with the previous Is Christmas Coming? (where children count presents) and the forthcoming I See Seashells (where children count shells), would make good classroom supplements as well as in-home extra practice. Richard also plans to introduce the concept of shapes in a future title, House of Shapes. All of these books are available in print or downloadable ebook.

Richard also is the author of Two Choices, a short young adult book about teenage pregnancy.

Sarah V. Richard's book IS CHRISTMAS COMING? a splendid book for children. In this book, an anxious little boy counts down the days 'til Christmas. He wakes every morning wanting to know if Christmas has come. His mommy tells him each day how many days are left until the big day.

The vivid, full-color illustrations begin with a decorated Christmas tree with 10 wrapped presents under it's glistening branches. With each day that passes, one present goes away. Not only will children learn to count from 1 to 10 in a creative way, they will also enjoy the amazement and excited behavior of the main character. The pictures and bouncy, rhyming text, give the book a charming appeal as it encourages conversations between reader and listener.

Richard's educational book, full of merriment, is a book that teachers and parents alike will want to read every Christmas season.

IS CHRISTMAS COMING? is highly recommended by this reviewer and her three children.

Review of "Is Christmas Coming?"

4.5/5 STARS!

ISBN: 1584952296

This is a wonderful little story, just PERFECT for reading with little ones as the Christmas holiday draws near. It begins ten days before Christmas and ends on the actual holiday. It is a daily conversation between a son and his mother. The little boy is anxious to open the presents, even just one. The mother must calmly sooth her son as they count down the days.

Each day has rhyming beat to it. This makes it excellent as a tool to teach your young children how to read. Parents may read it to their children, but the children will want to read it to themselves over and over. It may be purchased in print form from the publisher online, however, I would recommend downloading it to your computer from the publisher. By doing so, your child can get a head start on working with a computer. (Many schools begin teaching the use of computers in FIRST grade.) I highly recommend this story as a learning tool to help your child get ready for his/her school days. *****
